Can you tell us about your background and how you got started in recruitment?

I previously worked in sales & customer service before trying my hand at becoming a recruitment consultant in the sales sector. I began as a trainee and quickly developed into a resourcer.

What are some of the key qualities and skills that you think are important for success as a recruiter?

Communication, Market knowledge, organisational skills, and attention to detail.

How do you build relationships with clients and candidates, and what strategies do you use to keep these relationships strong over time?

Although I’m still in the early stages of my Recruitment Consultant role I believe that reliability, understanding and a degree of emotional intelligence play a big part in creating and maintaining relationships with clients & candidates. Understanding and filling the needs of both parties are crucial for success.

Can you walk us through your process for identifying and evaluating potential candidates, and what criteria do you use to determine whether someone is a good fit for a particular role?

The obvious ones come to mind; experience, qualifications, location, and personal goals & ambitions. I also think it’s important to understand what somebody wants from a new role rather than just what they can bring to a company themselves.

How do you handle difficult or challenging situations in recruitment, such as dealing with candidates who are not a good fit or managing conflicts between clients and candidates?

It is important not to burn bridges, and if a difficult situation arises, be understanding and try to keep both parties happy whilst remembering the initial goal of the task at hand.

Can you share an example of a particularly successful recruitment campaign you have led, and what strategies did you use to achieve this success?

Well my best (and only) example of this so far, was my first starter who began work yesterday. I began the campaign by visiting the site with my senior consultant, identifying what the client needed and getting a feel for the company first-hand, which was an advantage.

I then personally advertised the job exclusively, created a hit list and from there worked 1 to 1 with my chosen clients to assist them with their interviews. Thankfully this all proved to be successful and both parties were happy with their outcome and, subsequently, so was I.

How do you measure your success as a recruiter, and what metrics do you use to evaluate your performance?

Placements would be the primary measure of my success, but I think having a pipeline of trustworthy candidates and a proven track record with clients is also key.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a career in recruitment?

I would say it’s not for everyone, there will be ups and downs, but the rewards (which are fruitful) are based on the amount of effort you put in.
