Get up to Speed with STEM: Helping to close the sk...

The future talent of the UK manufacturing industries is a core focus of E3 Recruitment (E3R) and Get up to Speed with STEM, as we have seen a steady decline in engineering personnel within the UK manufacturing industry over the last ten years, and it is predicted that an additional 186,000 engineers are needed annually until 2024 to plug the skills gap with almost 20% of the current workforce due to retire by 2026.

As a result of this, E3R has been involved with Get up to Speed with STEM since 2017, Yorkshire’s largest employer-inspired science, technology, engineering, manufacturing (STEM), and construction careers event.

The event takes place this Wednesday 23rd March at Magna Science Adventure Centre Rotherham and promotes STEM to young people giving them a platform to speak to businesses, inventors, apprentices, and education providers.

Over 4100 visitors are registered to attend, so it is set to be a very busy and exciting day, with a number of the region’s biggest engineering and manufacturing companies exhibiting at the event, which include Sheffield Forgemasters, Gripple, Macalloy, CBE +, Airmaster, AMG SuperAlloys, Sheffield Precision Medical, Powerstar, DePuy Synthes, Balfour Beatty, ITM Power, Naylors, Turbine Surface and United Cast Bar will all be in attendance.

The E3R stand is located in the blue zone of the Magna and will offer young people information on apprenticeships in engineering and manufacturing, as well as practical tips on how to write a CV, and also a buzz wire activity with a chance to a prize.

South Yorkshire Regional Manager at E3R, Shabbir Ahmad, who will be attending the event commented: “After a two-year break due to covid, we are really excited to be exhibiting at Get up to Speed with STEM, which brings together key South Yorkshire manufacturers to help promote engineering and manufacturing to the next generation of future employees, ensuring we have a pipeline of young people entering the industry we serve.”

This year also sees the return of the Get up to Speed with STEM annual Business Breakfast networking event. Taking place before the official event starts, the Business Breakfast is one of the largest STEM networking events in the region. This year’s theme for the event will focus on the Digital Skills for Business Leaders and include representatives from some of the region’s top digital companies including keynote speaker, David Richards MBE, the Chairman, President, CEO and co-founder of WANdisco, the Sheffield based distributed computing specialists.

Sponsors of this year’s event include AESSEAL, CBE+, The Worshipful Company of Ironmongers, AMETEK Land, CityFibre, Highlander UK, UK Atomic Energy Authority, ARM, ITM Power, The IET, Forged Solutions, Balfour Beatty, Wessex Archaeology, Withers & Rogers, Hydra Creative, Dragonfly PR and Made in Sheffield.
